BREEDERS -Have you an Undocked litter of puppies? Do make sure you provide information leaflets to potential buyers abvout your breed, and give them an after sale puppy pack including 24-48 hours food with instructions. Litters should be registered with the Kennel Club(s) (not other registration bodies as yet) and both parties ought to enter into a contract of sale including requring pup to be permaaaently identified (microchip/tattoo) by 6 months of age. Contact the Alliance for leaflets if required. Please note we cannot 'vet' your litters but  will expect responsible ethics in dog breedinginfo@anti-dockingalliance.co.uk  should you wish to advertise with ADA

BREEDERS
– if you have a “swimmer” puppy take a look at this

BREEDERS -
watch out for loose fibres on fleece bedding as puppies can ingest and die.

BUYERS - DO NOT BUY FROM ANY ADVERTISER WHO WILL DELIVER TO A MOTORWAY SERVICE STATION OR TO YOU AND USES A MOBILE TELEPHONE NUMBER ONLY. OFTEN THEY SELL SEVERAL DIFFERENT BREEDS. BE ULTRA CAUTIOUS WHEN BUYING FROM A NON-PERSONAL WEBSITE OR ADVERTISEMENT IN A LOCAL PAPER. ALWAYS SATISFY YOURSELF THAT THE BREEDER IS BONA FIDE AND IS SHOWING YOU THE ACTUAL DAM AND SIRE OF THE LITTER FROM WHICH YOU ARE BUYING. ASK TO HAVE THE SIRE AND DAM'S DETAILS OF ALL THE APPROPRIATE HEALTH CHECK CERTIFICATES FOR THAT BREED AND CHECK THEM OUT WITH THE KENNEL CLUB FOR AUTHENTICITY. IF YOU VISIT AN ESTABLISHMENT TO BUY A PUPPY AND ARE UNHAPPY ABOUT THE CONDITIONS AND WHAT YOU ARE BEING TOLD - DO NOT BUY - REPORT YOUR CONCERNS TO THE LOCAL AUTHORITY FOR THAT AREA AND ASK THEM TO INVESTIGATE OR/ANDTHE RSPCA. BUYING A PUPPY FROM A BAD BREEDER ONLY MAKES THEM CARRY ON MAKING MONEY FROM IRRESPONSIBLE BREEDING PRACTICES BECAUSE PEOPLE BUY JUST TO GET THE PUPS AWAY FROM THE AWFUL CONDITIONS.
BY DOING JUST THIS, YOU MIGHT END UP GETTING A LIFE TIME OF VETS' BILLS.

2004 DOCKED BREED KENNEL CLUB REGISTRATIONS   88,600!!!! in one year alone - this does not count those that were not registered and mongrels that were docked.

1998>    PAIN - Recent research has shown that neonates are HYPERsensitive rather than HYPOsensitive as has been widely believed.  Neonates have an intact sensory central nervous system that does not have descending modular pathways that act as pain blocks seen in adults.  Research has also shown that the memory of neonatal pain can affect the animal in its adult life.  Symptoms include decreased pain threshold, anxiety, social disorders and aggression.    For FULL details link to:-

DOCKED BREEDS'  HEALTH INFORMATION
1/03 Recent articles by Wood and Lakhani (Animal Health Trust) show from an analysis of Labs. and Gordon Setters' BVA/KC hip scoring scheme that age of screening is important.  Also it seems to show that the score depends upon the month in which the dog was born.  In Lab/Rets. the hip score increases from the mean of 15 at 2 yr s of age to nearly 18 when done at 6 yrs old.  Dogs born between June and  October have a lower hip score than those born between November and May.
HD – fairly good hips;  HD – borderline hip dysplasia; HD – serious hip dysplasia  (refers to each breed below)

IMPORTANT
WARNING - DO NOT BUY
a puppy from a breeder who will not/cannot show you both the parent dogs' genuine Kennel Club/BVA hip score certificateS (or eye tests) in the breeds where there is a high prevalence of hip dysplasia (and eye problems). Check that the hip scores are within an acceptable range and eye tests are clear

IT WILL BE ILLEGAL FOR PUPPIES TO BE DOCKED after April 2007 (30th April Scotland).  Any puppy that has been docked as a Working dog covered by the exemptions must hold a Veterinary Certificate to say it has been done lawfully.

HEALTH CHECKS
which should be carried out on parent dogs for the following “docked” breeds before a puppy is purchased are listed against the breeds below.

(ALSO SEE Kennel Club website for GENETICS http://www.doggenetichealth.org/   Preferably buy from dogs which are kept in a domestic environment and not kennels as these should be better socialised and temperamentally more suited to their new family setting:-  Never buy from a puppy farm e.g. (where there are lots of different breeds  or pet store.

2007 KENNEL CLUB has stated that in all judging books this statement be added:-
'In assessing dogs, judges should penalise any features or exaggerations which they consider would be detrimental to the soundness, health and well-being of the dog'.

ENDORSEMENTS can be placed on a dog's KC registration papers by the breeder providing the dog is still in their ownership. There are 2 types of endorsements:-
R = Progeny not eligible for registration
X = Export Pedigree not Allowed
These do not prevent the dog being bred from or sent overseas but they do prevent litters being registered with the Kennel Club or the dog being registered at an overseas Kennel Club

Malcom Willis (Geneticist) says:- Few inherited problems which may be that there are few or the breed is numerically small for them not to be known. Breed population around 3,500. Occasional eye problems possibly inherited as an autosomal recessive. They include cataracts, micropthalmia (small eyes) retinal dysplasia and persistent pupillary membranes (PPM) These should be present in the foetal stage and then degenerate after birth but in PPM they persist. Muscular dystrophy causing gait abnormalities and easy exhaustion. It is found in the x-linked chromosome so would be seen in males (XY) and very rarely in females (XX) and is present from birth (congenital). Melanomic tumours usually malignant occurring in the skin but usually in older dogs (over 8 yrs.). Hyperkeratosis of footpad occasionally seen. It is a horny growth on the pad and relatively rare. Generally seen in families and may have a genetic base but this isn't established.

a)Medium docked set level with topline and carried erect.
b)Tail of moderate length to give a general balance to the dog, thick at the root nd tapering towards the tip, as straight as possible, carried jauntily but not excessively gay.

Dr. Malcolm Willis (Geneticist) says:- This is a numerically small breed Eye problems - glaucoma occurs occasionally and can lead to blindness; sometimes it is secondary but problem occurs when it is primary and believed to be genetic but mode of inheritance uncertain. Lens luxation also rarely seen but painful and shown to be an autosomal recessive. Cataracts but mode of inheritance uncertain and age of onset variable. A relatively rare condition is optic nerve hypoplasia which can lead to blindness. Skeletal - hip dysplasia has been reported although no dog has been submitted to the BVA/KC scheme most date comes from abroad. Patella luxation mode of inheritance is polygenic. Liver disorders - Copper toxicosis rare but may be inherited by a simple autosomal recessive; in severe cases death. Portosystemic shunts caused by the malformation and misdirection of the blood vessels that are outside the liver and allow blood to bypass the liver. Other conditions - hypothyroidism where the dog'd own immune system damages and can destroy the thyroid gland; causes rough scaly skin and hair loss as well as weight gain. Mode of inheritance unclear but may be recessive but is more widespread than breeders realise. Immune reaction can lead to atopic dermatitis wth rough itchy skin and seemingly allergic to pollen, grass seed, fleas and other irritants. Heart disease where heart muscle is abnormal can cause sudden death. It can cause oedema of the lung lethargy and reluctance to exercise. Mitral valve disease is beginning to be seen. Megaoesophagus occasionally occurs (constriction of the oesophagus) About 5 weeks onwards affected puppies constantly regurgitate food; most have to be put down but some can survive although they are susceptible to inhalation pneumonia.

a) Medium docked. Set high completing perfectly level topline. Carried erect.
b) Tail of moderate length to give a general balance to dog, thick at root and tapering towards tip, as straight as possible, carried jauntily, not excessively gay, completing perfectly level topline

Malcom Willis (Geneticist) says:- lens luxation, breeders getting lens luxation should consider parents of affected pups as carriers and affected pups as homozygous for the problem and should act accordingly. Cataracts which are usually posterior polar and can occur 6 months onwards and lead to impaired vision - mode of inheritance uncertain. Primary glaucoma can lead to blindness - mode of inheritance uncertain. Musculoskeletal conditions - muscular cramping similar to Scottie cramp - dogs may be affected permanently or intermittently. Problems with walking and respiration thought to be due to inherited deficiency of hormone serotonin Might find Legg-Calve Perthe's disease. Terriers do not have many reported problems it might be because there are few problems or just no incentive to report any.

M alcolm Willis (Genetiticst) says:- defects are relatively rare.  Eye:- lens luxation where lens luxates out of position and causes pain; possible autosomal recessive - if it happened in a litter both paretns are likely to carry trait.  Cataracts but inheritance not known.  Musculoskeletal: Patellar luxation (inward displacement of kneecap); Legg Perthes disease (femoral head dies) inheritance suspected but not confirmed. Myasthenia gavis where neuromuscular transmission is defective. Symptoms megaoesophagus (stretched oesophagus not able to process food properly) and muscle weakness.  May be congenital or acquired - autosomal recessive inheritance suspected.  Endocrine:- Diabetes mellitus usually from early middle age onwards - inheritance not known.  Skin:- scaly skin (fish scales) can be seen from birth>  Inheritance uncertain
KC Accredited breeders should
eye test in 2007

http://www.wheaten-health-initiative.co.uk/
Genetics: Digestive/kidney problemsProtein losing enteropathy (PLE) in foreign dogs so necessary to check ancestry) PLE is an inflammatory bowel disease starts about 3months of age to 6yrs. Unable to absorb food and diarrhoea follows. Can be fluid loss in abdomen and around lungs and heart. Protein losing nephropathy (PLN) inflammatory disease of kidneys starting at a year or later. Causes increased urination with high levels of protein Can lead to kidney failure. Both PLE and PLN are thought to be related and females more prone. As genetic in origin it is necessary to check ancestry before buying a pup.
Renal dysplasia another type of kidney disease has also been recorded in a few dogs but none recently in UK and is thought to be genetic in origin. Usually found under a year of age. The kidneys don't develop normally causing urinary tract infections and is
s usually fatal. EYES Cataracts (opaque covering of the eye lens can occur. PPM (Persistent pupillary Membranes) - thread like tissue that can occur over the pupil. In SCWT regarded as harmless. Retinal folds - a defect in development Wheatens carrying this condition should not be bred from . OTHER PROBLEMS: Some dogs usually females get urinary incontinence from birth (ectopic ureter). Hypoadrenocorticsm (Addison's disease) The adrenal glands do not produce normal levels of electrolytes and metabolic and blood pressure control. This causes listliness/depression, loss of appetite leading to weight loss sometimes accompanied by sickness. They can't cope with stress and can collapse with a slow heart rate. This is not so much a problem in the UK as it is in Australia and USA and can be treated by hormone replacement. At maturity should be examined for hip dysplasia. Dermatitis can be a problem as can ear irritation. Cardiac and cancer diseases do cause death in the mature dogs as with all breeds. See Wheaten Health Initiative (link above) for detailed information on the health information.

Dr. Malcolm Willis (Geneticist) says:- Only 2 inherited defects known Primary Glaucoma of unknown mode of inheritance and Lens Luxation which can be secondary (associated with glaucoma) or primary. In the latter is it possibly autosomal recessive trait. American studies list cataracts of unknown origin and PRA likely to be autosomal recessive trait and global in location. Hip status - none have been reported though the BVA/KC hip scheme since it started. Although it has been reported in other countries as has Legg Perthes disease (necrosis of the femoral head) and luxating patella (dislocation of the kneecap) Other problems - Megaosophagus can occur from 5 weeks of age (failure to swallow leading to regurgitation of food) most die or are PTS but some do survive for a few years although willo often die from inhalation pneumonia. Cryptorchidism (undescended testicles) mouth problems (overshot jaws) genetic based. Some defects may not be reported due to reluctance of breeders to do so but that does not mean to say that they are being eliminated.

Yorkies are described as blue steel and tan.  They are show size and quality. Breeder particularly concentrates on good mouths, bone conformation and health.  She is less interested in just breeding for coat ('a purely show requirement').  Litters contain the very small size and the robust family size. They are reared in a home environment and are taken for walks in the local countryside each day.  Only two girls of breeding age are kept which means they receive a lot of personal attention from the breeder's family.
