BREEDERS Have you an Undocked Litter of puppies. Do make sure you provide information leaflets to potential buyers abvout your breed, and give them an after sale puppy pack including 24-48 hours food with instructions. Litter should be registered with Kennel Club(s) (not other registration bodies as yet) and both parties ought to enter into a contract of sale including requiring pup to be permanently identified (microchip/tattoo) by 6 months of age. Contact the Alliance for leaflets if required. Please note we cannot 'vet' your litters but  will expect responsible ethics in dog breedinginfo@anti-dockingalliance.co.uk

– if you have a “swimmer” puppy take a look at this

BREEDERS -
watch out for loose fibres on fleece bedding as puppies can ingest and die.
2004 DOCKED BREED REGISTRATIONS   88,600!!!! in one year alone - this does not count those that were not registered with the Kennel Club and mongrels that were docked.

1998>    PAIN - Recent research has shown that neonates are HYPERsensitive
rather than HYPOsensitive as has been widely believed.  Neonates have an
intact sensory central nervous system that does not have descending modular
pathways that act as pain blocks seen in adults.  Research has also shown that
the memory of neonatal pain can affect the animal in its adult life.  Symptoms
include decreased pain threshold, anxiety, social disorders and aggression.

DO NOT BUY FROM ANY ADVERTISER WHO WILL DELIVER TO A MOTORWAY SERVICE STATION OR TO YOU AND USES A MOBILE TELEPHONE NUMBER ONLY. OFTEN THEY SELL SEVERAL DIFFERENT BREEDS. BE ULTRA CAUTIOUS WHEN BUYING FROM A NON-PERSONAL WEBSITE OR ADVERTISEMENT IN A LOCAL PAPER. ALWAYS SATISFY YOURSELF THAT THE BREEDER IS BONA FIDE AND IS SHOWING YOU THE ACTUAL DAM AND SIRE OF THE LITTER FROM WHICH YOU ARE BUYING. ASK TO HAVE THE SIRE AND DAM'S DETAILS OF ALL THE APPROPRIATE HEALTH CHECK CERTIFICATES FOR THAT BREED AND CHECK THEM OUT WITH THE KENNEL CLUB FOR AUTHENTICITY. IF YOU VISIT AN ESTABLISHMENT TO BUY A PUPPY AND ARE UNHAPPY ABOUT THE CONDITIONS AND WHAT YOU ARE BEING TOLD - DO NOT BUY - REPORT YOUR CONCERNS TO THE LOCAL AUTHORITY FOR THAT AREA AND ASK THEM TO INVESTIGATE OR/ANDTHE RSPCA. BUYING A PUPPY FROM A BAD BREEDER ONLY MAKES THEM CARRY ON MAKING MONEY FROM IRRESPONSIBLE BREEDING PRACTICES BECAUSE PEOPLE BUY JUST TO GET THE PUPS AWAY FROM THE AWFUL CONDITIONS.
BY DOING JUST THIS, YOU MIGHT END UP GETTING A LIFE TIME OF VETS' BILLS.

DOCKED BREEDS'  HEALTH INFORMATION
1/03 Recent articles by Wood and Lakhani (Animal Health Trust) show from an analysis of Labs. and Gordon Setters' BVA/KC hip scoring scheme that age of screening is important.  Also it seems to show that the score depends upon the month in which the dog was born.  In Lab/Rets. the hip score increases from the mean of 15 at 2 yr s of age to nearly 18 when done at 6 yrs old.  Dogs born between June and  October have a lower hip score than those born between November and May.
HD – fairly good hips;  HD – borderline hip dysplasia; HD – serious hip dysplasia  (refers to each breed below)
Figure in brackets is breed average hip score.Try to find litters where parents' hip scores are lower than averag
e

IMPORTANT
WARNING - DO NOT BUY a puppy from a breeder who will not/cannot show you both the parent dogs' genuine Kennel Club/BVA hip score certificateS (or eye tests) in the breeds where there is a high prevalence of hip dysplasia (and eye problems). Check that
the hip scores are within an acceptable range and eye tests are clear

E
NDORSEMENTS can be placed on a dog's KC registration papers by the breeder providing the dog is still in their ownership. There are 2 types of endorsements:-
R = Progeny not eligible for registration
X = Export Pedigree not Allowed
These do not prevent the dog being bred from or sent overseas but they do prevent litters being registered with the Kennel Club or the dog being registered at an overseas Kennel Club

IT WILL BE ILLEGAL FOR PUPPIES TO BE DOCKED after April 2007 (30th April Scotland).  Any puppy that has been docked as a Working dog covered by the exemptions must hold a Veterinary Certificate to say it has been done lawfully. Check photos out on this site to see what an undocked dog looks like

HEALTH CHECKS
which should be carried out on parent dogs for the following “docked” breeds before a puppy is purchased are listed against the breeds below.

(ALSO SEE Kennel Club website for GENETICS http://www.doggenetichealth.org/   Preferably buy from dogs which are kept in a domestic environment and not kennels as these should be better socialised and temperamentally more suited to their new family setting:-  Never buy from a puppy farm e.g. (where there are lots of different breeds  or pet store.

2007 KENNEL CLUB has stated that in all judging books this statement be added:-
'In assessing dogs, judges should penalise any features or exaggerations which they consider would be detrimental to the soundness, health and well-being of the dog'.

Malcolm Willis (Geneticist) says : Breed not yet numerically strong so information kn inherited or possible inherited defects are not yet available. EYES: Occasional cases of ectropion and entropion, inheritance unclear. Can be surgically treated. SKELETAL: Elbow dysplasia especially fragmented coronoid process (FCP) type tends to be polygenically in herited with relatively high heritability (over 40%). Breeders should continue to place emphasis on hip scores.OTHER PROBLEMS: Hypothyroidism is sometimes seen and can lead to the destruction of the thyroid gland due to the dog's own immune system attacking the gland. Leads to rough scaly skin hair loss and weight gain. Mode of inheritance uncertain but may be recessive trait. Liver problems caused by portosystemic shunt tends to intrahepatic type (blood vessels in the liver are abberrant causing abnormal blood circulation and impaired metabolism) Mode of inheritance uncertain. Cerebellar ataxia has been reported and leads to loss of Purkinje's cells of the cerebellum and to abnormal movement and head shaking. Usually lethal and thought to be caused by autosomal recessive trait through genetic cause.

?Torsion

Malcolm Willis, (Geneticist) says:- Hepatitis - symptoms include weight loss and vomiting
possibly acquired and not inherited.  Cataracts recorded but thought to be of a polygenic
nature although could be a dominant gene.  Breed has renal problem where excessive  amino acid
cystine is excreted via the urine.  May cause kidney stones not known whether genetic.

KC DNA testing scheme 2009 von Villebrands Disease

Malcolm Willis (Geneticist) says HIPS : Nearly 300 have been tested through the BVA scheme and the average score is 11 which means the breed is in the best half of scores but there is no need for complacency and alldo dogs to be considered for breeding should be tested prior to mating. GASTRIC DILATAION VOLVULUS – gdv (Bloat) is caused by the accumulation of food, fluid or gas in the intestines and the abdomen becomes distended. The abdomen can twist on itself and the food cannot be passed through. This is referred to as torsion and can become fatal very quickly. This is something often seen in large deep chested breeds (and Dachshunds). Von Willebrands Disease: - VWD. There are 3 forms in which there is a deficiency in the blood of the VW factor leading to something simlar to haemophilia. In some instances it is a dominant condition and others a recessive one. Puppies should only be bought from lines that have been tested DNA clear of VWD. EYE: Opacity of the eye indicative of cataracts which can be inherited or secondary to another disease. However little is known on this but parent dogs should have been eye tested before mating takes place. OTHER CONDITIONS: Temperament problems seem to be cropping up in the breed so puppy buyers should meet as many of the puppy's family members as possible especially the dam and if not seen enquire about the sire's temperament. If older dogs seem snappy or nervy avoid purchasing. EPILEPSY : This seems to be cropping up and the breed clubs are trying to track down the lines where inheritance may be involved . It is occurring in several prominent lines so always ask the breeder to show on pedigree dogs that have been affected and get them to explain the measures they have taken to avoid it in their breeding programme. Visit http://www.ourdogalfie.com to learn of one GWP's owner's experience.

The GWP Club is currently conducting a health survey see this link http://www.gwpclub.co.uk/ The response so far has been poor!! If you have a GWP DO take part. All information is treated confidentially.

TAIL STANDARD 2007 - Naturally tail-less or short, previously customarily docked. Full tail set high, carried horizontally or slightly lower.

Malcolm Willis (Geneticist) says that being a numerically small breed (French) there are not many animals in the UK in which to study problems. Umbilical and inguinal hernias may be found and the former is inherited. He suggests that small hernias be left alone and operations and breeding decisions should be confined to larger hernias. Cryptorcchidism (undescended testicles) possibly in 1-2%. Hypothyroidism (thyroid ddamaged by dog's own immune system) will sometimes occur. Entropion will be seen occasionally as will overshot bites and missing teeth. Mode of inheritance in any of these is unclear. Heart and circulatory systems Haemophilia A is known in breed and is inherited as a sex link recessive trait found on x chromosome, therefore rarely seen in females although they can be carriers and appear normal. When it does occur is usually due to a mating between normal male to a carrier female whose status was unknown. The end result would be half males would be normal and half would have haemophilia although values could alter in litters. An affected male if bred from will have 100% normal males and 100% carrier females. Males could be used without risk but females who could lead normal lives should not be bred from. The condition varies from mild to severe bleeding resulting in death. Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA). This is a heart condition where the blood vessels between the aorta and pulmonary artery fail to close properly after birth. These vessels are normal in the unborn but if they persist after birth they can cause heart murmurs and can lead to sudden death. PDA is believed inherited and to be polygenic.
Skeletal - can be affected by hip dysplasia. In Uk 14th worst breed and is only just better than the German Shepherd.
Those scoring less than 15 should present no problem to the dog but all dogs should be hip scored. Hip dysplasia is a polygenic trait with inheritance of between 25 and 45 per cent depending on the breed. The inheritance in the Brittany has not yet been defined. Fragmented Coronoid Process (FCP) is part of the elbow dysplasia syndrome and is known in Brittanys and is a polygenic trait with slighly higher inheritance than Hip Dysplasia. Patella Luxation has been known in the Brittany (kneecap rotates - usually inwards) because the kneecap is not securely in place. Usually a feature of smallish breeds and likely to be polygenic in origin. Eyes - PRA inherited as an autosomal recessive so for it to occur both parents must be carriers. DNA testing for this exists in other breeds but not yet for the Brittany. Lens luxation (lens slips to one side cuasing considerable pain) has been reported in the breed and is recessive trait. Mode of inheritance not established and until established consider as simple recessive. Cataracts and Glaucoma are known in breed but inheritance uncertain. Glaucoma can be primary but in some breeds is merely a symptom of some other problem in the dog. Neurological diseases - Epilepsy is known in the Brittany. Males more likely affected than females and usually starts between 15 nd 42 months. American research is suggesting that a major recessive gene linked to some sex effect may be the primary cause of idiopathic epliepsy. Fitting dogs should not be bred from. Cerebella degeneration where the Purkinjes cells of the cerebellum in the brain degenerate and is known in several breeds. Usuall onset is early in life and is seen as lack of coordination (ataxia) and paralysis. Possible autosomal recessive gene and possible later onset in Brittany. Usually fatal. Muscular degeneration (atrophy) of the spine is known in variety of breeds and a form of it has been reported in the Brittany. Can occur in puppyhood resulting in muscle wastage on legs and weakness on all four legs. Thought to be due to degeneration of the neurons of the spinal cord. Inheritance uncertain.
Other defects: Portosystemic shunts of 2 kinds. One in which the animal is born with extra blood vessels, which allows blood to bypass the liver. In the second there are abnormal blood vessels inside the liver which cause abnormal circulation of blood and incorrect functioning of liver. Brittany reported as having former which usually necessitates corrective surgery. Mode of inheritance unclear but constitutes a congenital defect since it is present from birth. Reports of 2 skin disorder in the Brittany. One is a deficiency in the immune system rendering the dog more susciptible to skin disease. The other is Discoid Lupus Erythematosus which results in scaly skin, pigment loss on the nose, crusting and ulceration. Also seen in some GSDs albeit rarely and may have a genetic basis.

ome eyelash and eyelid problems. Torsion?  This is a vulnerable breed so it is difficult to select from good hip stock at the same time selecting for other health issues and breed standards.  Some health problems may not be spotted because of the breeds' small numbers which in a large numerical breed would surface and be noted.    Check for temperaments Malcolm Willis (Geneticist) says:- A reduction in bodyweight would help hip problems. Entropion and Ectropion connected with macropalpebral fissure (an unusually large opening between the eyelids) probably of polygenic inheritance. The fissure can lead to diamond shape of eye and a combination of both entropion and ectropion.  Cataracts inheritance suspected.  Mitochondria (small spherical bodies involved with adenosine triphosphate synthesis; they can replicate and are involved with enzyme production. Myopathy (muscle disease) caused by deficiency of mitochondria also caused by deficiency of pyruvate dehydrogenase and this brings about malfunction of mitochondria causing sudden death but is rare.

Malcolm Willis (Geneticist) says: EYES PRA probably recessive genetic trait; lens luxation probably autosomal recessive; recessive cataract which can be identified from birth as can later ones; glaucoma primary or secondary – primary cab lead to blindness and is known in 2 forms; retinal dysplasia in which abnormal retinal folds develop, in extreme can bring blindness' entropion; ectropion. Circulation – cardiomyopathy may be inherited; narrowing of pulmonary artery where it attaches to heart causing heart murmurs and enlargement of right side of heart,
this is known as pulmonic stenosis – may be inherited as polygenic trait; haemophilia A and B both sex-linked recessive genes on X chromosome, both rare conditions which tend to occur in the male.  Haemophilia A is problem with Factor VIII, Haemophiliaaa B with Factor IX. An even rarer condition is Factor II which causes mild gum bleeds in puppies and bruising in adults.  Skeletal problems – luxating patellas usually knee cap turns inwards, may be polygenic trait;
hip dusplasia – about one third score <10 - 70% score <15 and 6% 30> and less than 2% 50>  Other problems – Vestibular disease, symptoms include head tilt, loss of balance, circling, staggering gait.  Impression is an ear problem but probably recessive autosomal trait.  Serious kidney disease appears to be recessive genetic trait – there is a size reduction of the kidneys leading to death in some casesSome solid gold colours have had ‘rage  syndrome'; reputable breeders have virtually eliminated the problem.

2008 Kennel Club Accredited breeders must now eye test. Hip scoring with a DNA test for fucosidosis and Progressive Retinal Atrophy (cord 1) are now recommended This breed will now be ceertified for the condition of goniodysgenesis/primary glaucoma
Malcolm Willis (Geneticist) says not particularly affected by serious health problems or hereditary disease EYES: GPRA (gereralised progressive retinal atrophy) resulting in blindness. Late onset 4-5 yrs sometimes 2 yrs can be identified by regular screening under the BVA scheme (see testing sites on this page) DNA test for PRA (cord 1 mutation) now available with the Animal Health Trust (AHT) http://www.aht.org.uk/ With central progressive retinal atrophy (CPRA) complete blindness is unusual. Thie can be detected between 12-18 months with BVA tests. Multifocal retinal dysplasia is type of retinal malformation. Can cause blindness but rarely in the ESS. BVA tsting at six weeks or under can identify. Entropion (eyelid lashes roll inwards against eye – usually identifiable at 6 weeks of age. Ectropion is opposite and eyelid rolls outwards exposing eye to foreign bodies and dirt increasing infection. Treatment by a Vet of both these conditions is likely to be required. Primary glaucoma (goniodysgenesis) fluid pressure inside eye increases, eye becomes painful and inflamed. Blindness follows. A test under the BVA eye schemes is available and this will detect likelihood of dog getting glaucoma. Likely inherited but still being investigated. STORAGE DISEASE: Affecting young adults between 18 months and 4 yrs, Fucosidosis can be inherited through autosomal recessive trait and is usally fatal. Symptoms include incoordination and ataxia (loss of control of movement) change of temperament, loss of learned behaviour, loss of balance, apparent deafness, visual impairment, varying degrees of depression. Affected dogs loe weight and may have swallowing problems with food regurgitation. A DNA blood test is now available through the AHT email Nigel.holmes@aht.org.uk or contact the ESS Breed Clubs' health co-ordinators Lesley Bloomfield 01923 823579 or Louise Scott 0208 427 3396 Yvonne Billows 01606 888303 for advice

males than females.  Hereditary cataracts,  angle closure glaucoma, faulty bites , missing
teeth, unilateral or bilateral cryptorchidism; atopic dermatitis which can involve immune
system.
    Check for temperaments

Malcolm Willis (Geneticist) says: WSS do not have many reported defects as the ESS but possibly because it has lesser numbers. EPILEPSY: most serious is primary epilepsy which can be caused by a variety of things (disease, tumours, nutritional imbalances, certain poisons, even teething in pups) but primary or idiopathic epilepsy is an inherited trait also found in other breeds such as GSDs, Belgian Shepherd, Labs, Retrievers etc.Usually more common in males and usually between 12 months and three and a half years although can occur outside that range. Possibly a major gene is implicated. If fitting is caused by some externall influence (poison) then if removed or treated, the fitting should disappear. In idiopathic or primary epilepsy the animal cannot be cured though drugs can help reduce severity. EYES: Hereditary cataracts are reported in the breed from early life and inherited as simple recessive trait.Testing can identify those affected but does not identify carriers though they can be traced through pedigrees. Angle closure glaucoma - thought to be a dominant trait but can be very late onset. Pressure build-up in eye can lead to blindness and if a dog is a carrier it will eventually show it although not obvious in youth. OTHER PROBLEMS "Show defects" such as faulty bites, missing teeth, unilateral or bilateral cryptorchidism (retained testicles) Atopic dermatitis where there is an adverse reaction to various allergens such as insects or pollen which can involve the immune system. SKELETAL: This is a bred tht should be routinely hip scored. The fact that a dog appears sound may not indicate freedom from Hip dysplasia.

Malcolm Willis (Geneticist) says the following have been reported in the breed but should not be
misconstrued and one should not believe a breed is riddled with problems:- EYES: eyelid/eyelash
disorders including entropion, ectropion and distichiasis believed inherited but mode of inheritance
not established. Cataracts of unknown inheritance with progressive retinal atrophy but probale
recessive trait  but not yet established in the DNA.  Corneal dystrophy but genetics unclear as
it is for dermoid cysts on cornea but these may be autosomal recessive.  SKELETAL: hip
dysplasia but getting better; craniomandibular osteopathy – recessive trait. Two kinds of dwarfism – pituitary which is recessive (cyst develops on brain) and an immunodeficiency problem about 4 weeks of  age but mode of inheritance vague.  Patellar luxation; ununited anconeal process in elbow; spina bifida; Wobbler syndrome/cervical spondylosis cause polygenic; hypertrophic osteodystrophy symptoms include fever, lethargy, lameness, depression, loss of appetite – xrays show sections of dead bone in affected joints might be caused by mineral imbalance in diet like excessive calcium but an inherited caused cannot be ruled out. HEART: Persistent right aortic arch can cause vomiting early on possibly polygenic; haemophilia A recessive sex-linked trait Factor VIII clotting is affected. Factor XI deficiency which leads to intense bleeding after trauma. REPRODUCTIVE: Cryptorchidism (should not be bred from); Pseudo and true hermaphrodites rare in most breeds but more common in Weimaraners and Cocker Spaniels. OTHER CONDITIONS: Torsion; Histiocytosis (skin cancer); Mastosarcoma; Ehlers-Danlos syndrome is a dominant trait inheritance unclear; Epilepsy (Canine Epilepsy Support Group – Mrs. Anne Morley, Helpline 08707 469 329); Myopathy –abnormal gait and may bunny hop - thought to be x-linked recessive rare in females; Syringomyella thought to be inherited as a dominant but is rare; Hypothyroidism; Umbilical hernias; Primary glomerulopathy (primary renal failure an uraemia symptoms lethargy, halitosis, weight loss, reduced appetite eventally renal failure, usually seen before 2 yrs of age, mode of inheritance unclear.

The Working Weimaraner
- Our Dogs 5/8/05 anon
Weimaraners come with a health warning!  This is one of the most difficult gun dog
breeds you can get, and most people fail with them as a result.  They're not well
understood and they have certain characteristics which make them particularly
unsuited to the British desire to reduce everything down to a series of little tests.
Now we have your attention, let's explain. The Weimaraner comes pre-programmed
with a directive to put food on the table and get rid of vermin. It is utterly determined
and 100% fixated on game. It has an exceptional nose.  It is also massively intelligent
(or should be, we have tended to try to breed this out in this country), gets bored very
easily and will pay absolutely no heed to you whatsoever until you have proved
yourself worthy of its work.  It does not respond well to the way we produce
gundogs in the UK, basically a set of "do this" instructions, because it needs to
put those instructions in the context of its work.  It is certainly an affectionate breed,
but it uses your need for its affection to get its own way.
That's the downside. The upside is this - get it right and the Weimaraner will leave
most gundog breeds standing when it comes to game finding, game treatment, and
production, resilience, speed, energy, and hunting.  It will hunt across a moor all
day without flagging, adopting a pace similar to the Desert Arab's triple, and it has
an uncanny ability to find game, partly because it is brainy and learns exponentially,
partly because it adapts its methods and pace to suit scenting conditions and partly
because it has to find.  Like all HPRs its retrieving instincts take a back seat to its
hunting but once this skill has been developed, it makes a class pick-up dog with a
good soft mouth and a strong desire to put game in the bag.  It's fine in the beating
line, although it can be competitive and because the line is usually working with
the wind behind, the dog will want to go forward to bring the ground back, not
always what the keeper needs.  It's splendid to shoot over and if, for example,
you're after wild pheasant on a grouse moor, once it knows you don't want to take
grouse, it will only produce pheasant.  It's excellent at deer work (do teach it to be
steady to deer because deer are in its in-built list of quarry species) and hawking.
The one things that it is not that good at is wild fowling and this is only because it
is too thin coated for the conditions.
So, if it's that good, why hasn't every shoot got one? And why does the breed only
have 2 field trial Champions (2005)
Go back to the health warning.  This breed takes at least 2-3 years to produce and
the path from a 6 week old puppy to field trial standard adult is at its best, rocky.
Then there's the fact that we don't have the knowledge base in the UK to help people
bring their dogs on properly.  Plus like all HPRs the Weimaraner needs to run
ground and be worked on game to develop and this puts particular demands on
people's time, facilities, dedication, and knowledge. Plus the Weimaraner is not
that well known as a working gundog in the UK, ironic when you consider it was
first brought into this country for just that purpose.  And frankly, it's distinctive and
showy and until gamekeepers have seen its exceptional work they tend not to trust
something that looks so different from everything else.
I have worked a team of Weimaraners and Labs  for several decades and although
the Weims are extremely demanding, I can't recommend them highly enough.  But if you want to work one, throw away your social calendar you won't have time for that!

Janet Drewery - Our Dogs 8/05 :-'I am not sure what the attraction is, whether it's their
natural aptitude for work, their effortless gait, the way the sun catches their coats or
just their downish looks, it just gives them that edge for me.  I have owned 7
long-haired Weimaraners over 4 generations all of which have been natural hunters and
swimmers, facing all types of cover and terrain in the worst type of weathers, struggling
only in extreme heat.  Over the years of viewing mixed haired litters, I have never
observed one where the different coats were
apparent before 3 days as long-haired
pups are stripy too.  The first obvious difference being the way the coat lies, often
easier under infra red light.  Regarding their development it is often the long-haired
pups which are first to gain their independence and successfully escape the
whelping box    Initially they seem to grow at a more rapid rate than their
short-haired litter siblings (ADA - possibly as
the long-haired are not currently being
docked!)yet are a lot slower maturing both mentally and physically not getting their
full coat until 2-3 years old.  Grooming of the coat is minimal as it has a silky texture
most grass seed and thorn will fall out as the coat dries.  The only trimming required
is between their toes and around their paws.
They moult twice a year often leaving a dark eel stripe down their backs, the bitch loses
most of her coat after havinga litter of  pups.  The long-hairs natural working ability is their
forte.  Observing the head carriage of l
ong haired I find they have a more hound like attitude
not normally carrying it as high and therefore not appearing quite so"flashy" whilst working.
As for breeding long to short, the only certainty is long to long produces long.  I have
never known of that combination producing either a mixed or short haired litter.
